Abstract
This thesis with title ”Students’ Difficulties In Understanding Phrasal Verbs In Speaking, discusses the difficulties of students in understanding Phrasal verbs at fifth semester. The writer choose the fifth semester because they have some problems or questions where they not understand about phrasal verbs especially in speaking. This thesis purpose to the students that improve their speaking. In this research the writer use the qualitative research. The writer took the data in field research with observation that in recording so that the writer know the kinds of phrasal verbs that use it. The writer took the 10 students as the sample from the 21 students. Besidely, the writer give some questions to students so that get the informations about the difficulties that happen to the students. The instruments of research are interview and recording. The result of this research have severals difficulties in understanding phrasal verbs. Based on the interview they are have difficulties. The seldom to use the phrasal verb, lack of vocabulary of phrasal verbs, not understand about meaning, and they dont have enough books. So the result are from 10 students : five the students difficult in lact of vocabularies and meanings, three students difficult in understand of meaning, and two students difficult in voabularies. Meanwhile based on the recording, the writer have the result about kinds of phrasal verbs that many students use adverbial phrasal verbs that combines with an adverbial particle to form a new vocabulary item. In addition, some of the students use the preposition phrasal verbs. As the conclution the writer hope the students understand about phrasal verbs and use it. Than, the writer hopely, this thesis useful for the students and to writer self.
