Abstract
This study aims to analyze the types of figurative language presented in the lyrics of the song “Glimpse of Us” by Joji and to interpret the meanings conveyed through those figurative expressions. Figurative language is commonly used in song lyrics to express emotions implicitly and artistically. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with a content analysis approach. The data source of this study was the lyrics of the song “Glimpse of Us” by Joji. The data were collected by identifying, classifying, and selecting lines of the lyrics that contain figurative language. The analysis was conducted by categorizing the figurative language based on Perrine’s theory and interpreting the contextual meanings of each expression. The findings of this study revealed that several types of figurative language were found in the song lyrics, including metaphor, hyperbole, repetition, symbolism, paradox, irony and imagery. Among these types, metaphor was the most dominant figurative language used in the lyrics. The metaphors in the song function to convey complex emotional states, such as longing, jealousy, confusion, and inner conflict experienced by the speaker. Meanwhile, hyperbole emphasizes the intensity of emotions, simile helps compare emotional experiences clearly, and personification adds expressive depth to abstract feelings. In conclusion, figurative language plays a significant role in conveying the emotional meaning and aesthetic value of the song “Glimpse of Us”. The use of figurative expressions allows listeners to interpret the emotional struggles presented in the lyrics more deeply. This study is expected to contribute to the understanding of figurative language in song lyrics and serve as a reference for students and researchers interested in linguistic and literary analysis.
