Abstract

The purpose of this study is to assess whether IAIN Langsa students have the efficacy to use ellipsis when they speak English or not to convey the meaning and to find out how ellipsis impacts the clarity, coherence, and overall effectiveness of English communication happen among English department students at IAIN Langsa. This research use qualitative research by the type of research is narrative research. The participants are 6 students of English Department IAIN Langsa using observation and questionnaire. The result provides the level of proficiency of English Department students in using ellipsis are not on the next level, but some of them know how to use ellipsis to convey meaning, and the use of ellipsis still have an impact on the clarity, coherence, and overall effectiveness of English communication among English department students at IAIN Langsa; provided by their statement in the questionnaire.
