Abstract
This research is about the case of standard language writing on writing ability. This study found that by providing a lack of standard language use in daily activities students could get used to writing standard language in their writing. This research was conducted at IAIN Zawiyah Cot kala Langsa. This research was designed qualitatively. The researcher chooses English Department students in one unit as the subject, and determining the object is a form of three academic writing texts. The purpose of this study is to improve formal language writing. To get the data needed, researchers conducted documentation and observation. Furthermore, to process data, Miles and Huberman's technique was taken to find out the results of this study. The results of this result are the third semester students discovering their techniques which are often used in writing formal writing in English. On the other hand, students find difficulty in writing formal language writing because they cannot distinguish between standard and non�standard language. The results of the preliminary study that students find problems with their criteria are accepted, and it is evidenced by this research that found their techniques that refer to problems in previous research. problems found in other criteria created by students produce that most of them have a limited understanding of writing standard language in English and are not accustomed to writing standard language in English. Based on the research, the researcher recommends that students can write the standard language in student writing and also for lecturers to provide clear explanations about writing standard language and familiarize students using standard language.
