Abstract
At STAIN Zawiyah Cot Kala Langsa specialy in English Department, there are some students who use Indonesia as their first language. They use it in daily life. They have the dialect or characteristics that influenced by Indonesian dialect in communicating. The influence of mother tongue makes the students difficult to produce good pronounciation, good sound, stress, rhythm and intonation in speaking. So the writer want know to much the effects of using mother tongue towards students’ ability in speaking English at STAIN Zawiyah Cot Kala Langsa? the aims of conducting this research are to find out how much the effects of using mother tongue towards students’ ability in speaking English at STAIN Zawiyah Cot Kala Langsa. The writer used qualitative descriptive research and took 20 sample by using Purposive sampling. The techniques of collecting data applied by the writer are test and questionnaire. From the calculation of the questionnaire and speaking result, the result of the is 60 % in category poor by test and questionnaire respond 35 % student answered always use mother tongue in speaking English.
