Abstract

English is a tool used for global communication in this era and students studing and learning English as first foreign language. English lecturer uses English in explaining the material and sometimes switch their explanation into Bahasa Indonesia. The reason why the researcher wants to conduct this research is to find out the phenomenon types and possible factors of lectures code switching in the classroom activity. This study uses qualitative descriptive research because the data will be convey into transcribes. The researcher analyzes the use of lecturers code-switching. The data collected observation and interview. The sample of this study consist of two lecutrer in Speaking I in the third semester students at English Department. The result of the study shows that the types of code switching dominantly used by Speaking lecturers is intersentensial code switching, fisrt lecturer (78,73%) and second lecturer (82,35%). The possible factor that natural phenomenon to switch the code to encourage and effort toward students more indenpendently to speak up as beginners in Speaking lesson as foreign speakers in classroom activity. Finally, the lectures used code switching in explaining the material sometimes without any problem which is occured by lecturers habit.
