Abstract

This research aim is to know the students’ comprehension the procedure text, and are there effect or not toward students’ comprehending the procedure text by using printed authentic material. The designing of this study is true experimental especially pre-test – post-test control group design by using random sampling. The subjects of this study are students of SMP Negri 4 Langsa. The research was conducted for the ninth grade students in the first semester of academic year 2015/2016. In this research, the researcher used two classes, namely experimental and control class, they are IX5 and IX6. The pre-test- posttests are done in both classes. The first, researcher gave them the pre-test by using conventional method. The second time, the researcher gave them the post-test after giving the treatment by using printed authentic material. The learning process was conducted for four times. After analyzing data of the research, showed that tscore ≥ t table . The mean score of pre-test-post-test for experimental class by using t-test was 7.69. It is bigger than 2.06 from t-table and the mean score of posttest by using t-test in control class was 1.93. It is smaller than 2.06 from t-table. It can be represented as follows: for experimental class, Ha is accepted because 7.69 > 2.06. Therefore the researcher can conclude that: there is positive effect of comprehending the procedure text by using printed authentic material to the ninth grade of SMP Negri 4 Langsa and Ho is rejecting because the post-test in control class 1.93 is smaller than t-table 2.06. Finally, the result of this research shown that the authentic material can make the students’ comprehension in procedure text at the ninth grade students’ of SMP Negri 4 Langsa. It was signed by their ability to comprehending the part of procedure text, i,e: language feature, generic structure, step, purpose ect.
