Abstract

The purposes of this research were to analyze the types of figurative language in the song lyrics 'Mockingbird' by Eminem and to determine the dominant types of figurative language found in the song lyrics 'Mockingbird' by Eminem. The research used the theory of Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) about various types of figurative language as the basic in analyzing the data. The researcher used qualitative method in the form of content analysis. The instrument used in this research was documentation. The results of the research showed that there were found 9 types of figurative language used in the song lyrics, like as metaphor, hyperbole, metonymy, symbolism, synecdoche, simile, personification, paradox also irony and the most dominant type is metaphor (12 examples). Eminem uses metaphor in his lyrics to add depth and imagery to the song, allowing him to transmit emotions and ideas clearly and efficiently. One explanation for Eminem's significant use of metaphor in 'Mockingbird' is his aim to portray universal and emotive parental experiences, particularly his sentiments for his daughter, Hailie. Eminem uses metaphor to make the lyrics more vivid and memorable, while also adding depth and complexity to the content of the song
