Abstract
The purpose of good translator is to translate idiomatically as idiomatic translation is similar with written text of target language. Moreover, idiomatic translation can be understood easily by the reader of target language. The aim of this research is to find out the improvement of students’ translation competence as the result of using the techique of making idiomatic translation as a good translation at SMA Negeri 1 Langsa specially students of XI IPA 6 as experimental group and XI IPA 7 as control group. The type of the research is quasy experiment. The research data was collected by using translation test. Experimental group use treatment the technique of making idiomatic translation. On the other hand, control group use conventional strategy. This research was conducted from August, 27th to September 5th, 2015. The result of research is the technique of making idiomatic translation can improve students’ translation competence. That is proven by the result of independent t-test. The result of pre-test for control group, gets average of value 43.28 , whereas experiment group gets average of value 42.16. However, for post test result, at control group with average of value 51.87. And post test result for experimental group with average of value 79.67. Value of tcalculation from analyze result 20.856. It is smaller than value t table 1.67 for signification is 0.05. From the calculation, researcher concluded that the technique of making idiomatic translation can improve students’ translation competence at SMA Negeri 1 Langsa. Besides, cohesive is the most increasing competence (13.22) of post test, as the result of applying the technique of making idiomatic translation. Therefore, this technique can be applied by students and everyone who want to improve their translation in order to produce a good translation
