Abstract

This research was about lecturers’ feedback on students’ speaking performance in speaking class and was conducted at the English Education Department of IAIN Langsa. The objective of this research was to describe and analyze lecturers’ feedback on students’ speaking performance based on the types of feedback. The problem in this research was analyzed by using a qualitative phenomenological approach. The subject of this research was lecturers and students at the English Education Department of IAIN Langsa. The data were collected by interview and observation which aim to find out the feedback provided by lecturers in speaking class. The researcher interviewed once and observed twice. The researcher interviewed ten students in English Education Department to gain comprehensive and accurate data. The observation process is carried out during the teaching-learning process in the classroom. The observations were done by attending the speaking class, making field notes of all that happened in the classroom during the teaching and learning process and recording all the speech events in the classroom. The result of the research indicated that the lecturers used feedback as advice in the learning, praise and correction. The types of feedback provided by lecturers were affective feedback, explicite feedback and recast. Affective feedback refers to the occurrence of the positive reinforcement to the correct response given by the students. Explicit feedback is the lecturer indicates the student's mistakes clearly and provides the students with the correct form of errors. Recast is the lecturer's reformulation of all or part of the student's speech excluding errors. Based on the result of the research, it can be concluded that the lecturers at English Education Department had three types of classification feedback that were proposed by experts.
