Speaking is the oral skill that measures the students’ ability in mastering English. There are many aspects of speaking that have been studied by students in senior high school, one of them is expression. Particularly in SMAN 4 Langsa, most of the tenth grade students are hard to used expression in speaking. The students are confused to practice expression in the real situation even though they have studied it. Based on the reason, the writer is interested to try contextual teaching learning to improve students’ speaking ability. The writer did the research which has purpose to analyze the effectiveness of contextual teaching learning to improve students’ speaking ability in understanding expression at the tenth grade students in SMA 4 Langsa.
