Abstract
The Aceh Ulama Consultative Assembly (MPU) is the only provincial council of ulama that afficially recognize under the Indonesian law. The recognition is not only noted ubder the Indonesian basic constitution (UUD 1945), but also consituted at the implementation level under the provinsial law. The legal recognitiontoword the existence of MPU is a tireless effort since the Sultanate of Aceh was existed until the ending of long-term conflict between the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian central the government in Jakarta post-tsunami disaster in 2004. Although the legal right has been grantedfot the MPU, at the implementation level, however, it could not be Jully Functioned. This paper aims to observe the jurisdiction of the MPU Aceh under the Indonesian legislation including the constraints faced by them to act in accordance to right given by the law. This is a qualitative study that use related literature review as the main sources of data. Additionally, the data is gathered through documentary studies and in-dept interviews with related parties. The data collected is analysed using qualitative methods and it is then presented in a descriptive form. This Studuy found that the MPU Aceh has a wide jurisdicyion ranging from the field of religion, government, development, socio-cultural and community to the Islamic Economic, Nevertheless, the main problem finding is imperfect understanding about implementation of sharia, particulary among the government official it cause difficult ecpansion of the role of ulema in the field of government.
