Abstract
Beginning elementary school reading skills are the basic skills for reading skills. Beginning reading skills, especially in lower grades such as grades I and II, need to be considered and strategies that emerge in the form of methods or media in the learning process. Picture puzzle media is one of the media that can help teachers in carrying out activities in the learning process of beginning reading skills. The purpose of this study was to determine the application of pictorial puzzle media to improve students' initial reading skills at MIN 14 Langkat. This method uses classroom action research (CAR) which includes three meetings in one cycle. The object of this research is the first grade students of MIN 14 Langkat, totaling 38 students, including 21 female students and 17 male students. The instruments used in this study were oral tests, teacher and student observation sheets. The results showed that the average reading ability of students in the first cycle was 73.13, there were 19 students who achieved the KKM. In the second cycle with an average of 80.13 there were 30 students who reached the KKM. Therefore, based on the analysis used, pictorial puzzle media can improve students' initial reading skills at MIN 14 Langkat
