Abstract

Abstrak Sayriah Supervisory Board (Dewan Pengawas Syariah (DPS), basically is the deligation of the Syariah National Board (Dewan Syariah Nasional (DSN) with the role to realize and implement the religious rulings (fatwa-fatwa) which have been passed by the DPS. While the DPS acts as supervisor representing syariah financial institutions, to ensure that those instutions run in accordance with the principle of syariah. It is not only supervising the syariah financial product, but also it covers the management and administration of the institution to be inline with the syariah. The DPS does not directly involve in the management of the institution, because it is under the authority of the director of the institution. It can only give suggestion or input to the director. However, the number of syariah financial institution which has benefited maximumly from the role and function of the DPS is relatrively small. So does the level of professionalism of the members of DPS which is remained weak. In the future, the DPS is expected to be a strong and effective board that could function optimally for development of the syariah institution in Indonesia in particular.
